There's been some pretty grim news today about the future of Yorkshire Television.
Another victim of the recession (and I think the more diversified media landscape) that we love and trust, fell foul of the march of 'progress'.
Still, I personally won't miss Heartbeat, The Royal or Countdown - in fact, any of the other old school programming that has been outwitted by the smaller, nimbler channels. The world changed a good few years ago and in my opinion, some of the traditional telly folk refused to see the writing on the wall.
What I will miss ( and have missed in recent years) is Yorkshire Television - not 'ITV Yorkshire' by the way - and how it managed to stay so relevant to so many people for so long.
In no particular order, here's my top ten:
- Indoor League
- Hadleigh
- Queenie's Castle
- The Flaxton Boys
- The Beiderbeke Trilogy
- Follyfoot
- Johnny go home
- 3-2-1
- Rising Damp
- Oh No - It's Selwyn Froggit!
You know what - there's some real quality in there. It just doesn't happen these days does it? There's a real link to a time and a place.
By the way, Rex Ripley was a tutor on my graphics course at Kramer College in Leeds.
He designed the original YTV logo.
Big up to you Rex, can't imagine you're still around now. If you are, you'll be pissed off. He was always a bit crazy so whatever his mental state, he'll have a view, Note to self: Google Rex.
